Oh Those Warriers (#1082)

19 05 2017
  1.  I have been putting my thought efforts into a different medium the past couple of weeks. Last night I read a passage in a Zen Encyclopedia about the “Six Paths” which I also seem to know as the Six forms of rebirth. Six Realms of Reality or Six Realms of Existence, “namely three good realms (heavenly, demi-god, human) and three evil realms (animal, ghosts, hellish)”. (Wikipedia) The Zen Encyclopedia said that some felt these were metaphorical. Waking this morning I thought on the Hindu Castes: Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras and Untouchables (those outside caste). I wonder if at some point they were metaphorical. On waking I did not realize that the Brahmins were at the top of the caste system. The rulers are relegated to the second caste in Hinduism. The connection with the Buddhist realms of existence is that the demi-gods are above humans and always fighting among themselves. The best realm to be open to enlightenment is the human form; this presumably corresponds to the Brahmin caste. Of course, on the further review, it does not pass the being alert and awake test. Still, always good to look at it metaphorically.
