Mid Stay Pause (# 870)

30 10 2013

1. It seems as if it has been a very long day. On the other hand, we are now a half hour into the second half of the week.

There has been some negative energy flying around here this morning.

2. Gr.

3. Stopping habitual negative behavior. Hmmm.

4. From Geshe Yeshe Tibden’s commentary “a person who complains about each small difficulty will also suffer greatly” P.195)  hmmm he goes on to say that the suffering we experience is due to our own failings and is not caused by others (p.196)

5. Continuing… we must control our mental afflictions but if we can’t, we should vigilant as if we were in a place of bandits and thieves. (sounds like my mind 🙂 )

6. If we start to get angry we must remember that it will only hurt ourselves.

Negative Energy (# 869)

30 10 2013

1. TGT. Did a combination riding and walking on the way in for the second day in a row. Hoping to build back up again.

2. I had a big batch of negative energy come into my office this morning. It is hanging heavy on me. Tjhich said sometimes you can see someone’s suffering and you may be the person to do something about it. What can I do?

3. Gr. Yes.

4. Thought for the day: a self-important person is a slave to the opinion of others (Geshe Yeshe Tobden, Commentary on Shantideva).

Trying to remember Some of the Things I Learned (# 868)

28 10 2013

1. TGT. A coolish day for the ride in. Just now remembering it is enough to be alive.

2. Gr. Remembering this too.

3. Remembering I have committed to ending my habitual negative behavior. Have I ended any yet?

4. F. It is evening and I am stopping for a moment. Thinking about the Kingdom of God is calming. It would be nice to have that attitude.

Embrace Suffering (# 867)

27 10 2013

1. TGT. Greetings on a lovely Sunday morning.  I am alive and you are too, if you are reading this. It is enough.

2. Gr. More than I can know.

3. I have forgotten my intention to remember in each post to cease my habitual negative behavior. It showed up many times in the past week, sadly.

More from Thich Nhat Hanh’s talk last night with some of my own commentary.

4. Thich mentioned one thing that became very clear while I was working on genealogy: pain has been transmitted from fathers, mothers, grandparents, ancestors. When we understand our own suffering, we better understand the suffering of others. Thich mentioned hurting others and gave an example of saying something mean to a grandmother last year; she had since passed away. Thich said the grandmother existed in every cell of his body (and suddenly I understand what he means – in DNA). A way to not carry on the guilt of this, is to tell every cell in our bodies that we realize that was wrong and will strive not to do it again. The grandmother in each of those cells will smile. (What a useful method for all the pain we are carrying for things we might have said and done to our parents).

5. Usually when I have thought about opening my heart, the metaphor has been that compassion will flow outwards. Last night Thich talked about opening our hearts and allowing compassion and mindfulness to enter in. The heart is embraced by mindfulness and compassion.

6. Thich noted Shakyamuni is Buddha in human form and mentioned a creator Buddha. I was not able to catch the name he called him. This Buddha made life available to us and we can touch this Buddha anytime.

7. Sunflower can teach us the dharma (Buddha has never stopped teaching): — The sunflower is made up of non-sunflower elements: sunshine; the sunflower can not exist without sunshine; clouds: the sunflower can not exist with out the rain. Sunshine and rain/suffering and happiness. Suffering can not exist without happiness. Happiness can not exist with suffering.

8. Mindfulness – touching the Kingdom of God. If you have this, you do not need anything else.

9. We do not have to die to get to the Kingdom og God. In fact, we should be very much alive. No tension, We should enjoy walking in the Kingdom of God. We can remind ourselves to do this all the time. Walking from the car to the house. (Walking from the house to the garage to get the bicycle). You can be happy in the here and now.

10. We all have an appointment in the here and now. Every breath brings us in to the here and now. We can plan for the future–just do not get caught up in the tensions and anxieties. The future is in the here and now. If there is no happiness and no love in the here and now, there will be no happiness and love in the future.

11. Happiness, like everything else, is impermanent. That is why we need to practice to renew. If we do nothing, it will die.

12. We may believe there is no suffering in the Kingdom of God. If we are mindful, we will see that is simply not true. There is no happiness without suffering; there is no suffering without happiness. Just as the sunflower can not be by herself, we also can not be by ourselves. The sunflower and us are interwoven with the whole cosmos. We can not live by ourselves; we are made up of the non-us elements.

13. Happiness is made up of non-happiness elements; suffering is one of those elements.

14. Looking at others mindfully, we see their suffering. We see that they need someone to help. We may be that person to help them. Looking mindfully at their suffering, we no longer want to punish them.

15. Through suffering we learn to be understanding and compassionate.

16. Suffering is a wonder of life. There is a goodness of suffering.

17. The Kingdom of God is a place where people know how to handle suffering. We need to learn how to make good use of suffering. We need to learn to generate love and compassion. Compassion has the power to heal.

18. Thich then went on to talk about mindful consumption. We may be sick because we consumed things that do not give good health. What do we bring into our bodies by way or our mouth. (Thich recounted one of Buddha’s parables about a couple eating their son. I did not get the point completely so I’ll just make the reference). Then he went on to talk about consuming and its affect on our planet. We should eat in such a way that helps the planet. When we watch TV, we consume. When we are on the internet, we are consuming. When we read a newspaper, we are consuming. We consume because we do not know what to do to handle the suffering inside us. We do not have time for ourselves. We do not have time for our families. We do not have time for nature. We are running away. (at this point we needed to turn off the live feed and will watch the rest when it is available). Hopefully there will be more to this. Thank you Thich and those who brought this teaching to the internet.

19. F. (Later) Thinking of my mother and father in every cell in my body. I have much to do.

20. F. Just stopping and looking this time. (Must remember to do this more often).

Can Not Be (# 866)

27 10 2013

1. Tonight we listed to a teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh. One of the soundbytes was that “We can not be; we can only inter-be”. I do not have time to post it all tonight but this is a good thought to ponder.

2. Another soundbyte: Meditation should be a reunion of body and mind. Listen with every cell.

3. TGT. A beautiful day and a wonderful walk. Afterwards I have an urge to take off an entire week and spend it in the woods.

4. Gr. I am much blessed.

When is Busy-ness a Sign of Self-Importance # 865

25 10 2013

1. Oh my, the continuing rat race. When to drop out? Do I keep saying “some day”? As I stop to write this, tasks are tugging at my sleeve. It is Friday and I feel an urge to compete so much before going home. Good to stop and look it all over.

2. Gr. I am so fortunate I am still able to work. I have not been 100% this week but it has not prevented me from working.

3. Sometimes I put up a heading with a question and do not have any answer. Maybe that is the topis to ponder today. Why am I working?

4. Home resting but restless too. With the whole weekend before me, my mind is anxious to get started on things. At the same time my body is pretty tired.

Saturday Within (# 864)

19 10 2013

1. TGT. I am alive. It is enough. This is a gift of another day.

2. Gr. I have been most fortunate.

3. I must stop habitual negative behavior.

4. Arhats in Christian terms… this was one of the thought series I was having when I awoke this morning. It is easier to understand when put in more familiar terms.

Disorganized (# 863)

16 10 2013

1. TGT. Home today resting. Yesterday I had a vision of all I was going to get done. I wonder what happened today. Wait, that is not a good thought.

It is enough to be alive.

Now that’s better.

2. Gr. Even better.

3. I am fortunate that this is such a minor problem and that I can think, read and write.

Stop til You Drop (# 862)

13 10 2013

1. TGT. A beautiful day outside. I am inside but enjoying not doing too much. It is enough…

2. I must stop my habitual negative behavior

3. Gr. Yes!

4. At the same time I am working away on my new project. I need to stop at least to drop my tensions and fears.

5. F. Just a stop

6. F. Stopping before making an attempt at the description I need to write.

Working Out a Project (# 861)

12 10 2013

1. TGT. The sun has been streaming in the window this morning as I lie here a wee bit wounded. It is enough that I am alive.

2. Gr. Yes!

3. When I going to cease my negative habitual behavior?

4. I need to put together a summary of my our project this weekend or soon after. If I focus for a short time, will that help?

5. F. Stopping. Got a wee bit done in the interim since last post.
